Can Venetian Plaster Handle Utah Bathroom Humidity?
Venetian plaster and lime-based finishes are actually well-suited to bathrooms when properly specified and sealed. Lime is naturally breathable, meaning it absorbs and releases moisture without trapping it behind the surface — unlike vinyl paint, which can trap moisture and lead to mold. For high-moisture zones like showers, we recommend tadelakt (naturally waterproof) or sealed microcement. For bathroom walls outside the wet zone, a properly sealed venetian plaster is an excellent choice.
Utah's dry climate is actually an advantage here — lower ambient humidity means plaster finishes in Utah bathrooms face less moisture stress than equivalent installations in coastal climates. We have installed venetian plaster and tadelakt in dozens of Salt Lake City and Park City bathrooms with excellent long-term results.
