Tadelakt

Traditional Moroccan waterproof plaster — a stunning, durable choice for wet areas.

Tadelakt is a traditional Moroccan lime plaster that has been used for thousands of years in hammams, riads, and palaces. The name means "to rub" in Arabic — referring to the polishing technique that, combined with olive oil soap, creates a naturally waterproof surface without any synthetic sealers.

The result is a wall surface that looks and feels like natural stone — smooth, warm, and organic — yet is completely waterproof by nature of the lime chemistry rather than a topcoat. It is the ultimate material for creating a spa-like bathroom that will age beautifully and last a lifetime.

Our Process

1

Substrate Preparation

The substrate must be perfectly stable and moisture-proofed. We use a cement board backer in wet areas to eliminate any flex.

2

Lime Plaster Base

A coarse lime undercoat is applied to build thickness and provide the ideal key for the tadelakt finish.

3

Tadelakt Application & Polishing

The finish coat of tadelakt is applied and polished with a smooth stone in circular motions while still wet, compressing the surface.

4

Soap Treatment

Black olive oil soap is worked into the surface and the polishing continues, triggering the chemical reaction that waterproofs the plaster.
